What are warts?
Warts are the result of a virus that is spread through touching. They appear on the skin as rough growths with a pattern of black dots that are simply clotting blood vessels. There are three forms of warts – common, genital, and plantar. Common warts often disappear on their own but can be removed by a dermatologist if you are uncomfortable with their appearance or want to prevent them from spreading.
What causes the warts?
All warts are caused by a form of the HPV virus. It is important to note that just like any other virus, there are different strains of the HPV virus that produce different types of warts. Common warts, though unattractive, are generally harmless; however, genital warts can lead to serious medical conditions, including cervical cancer. Those with compromised immune systems may be at a higher risk for warts.
What do warts look like?
Usually present on the hands and fingers, common warts appear as rough bumps that can be flesh, pink or darker in color. You may get one wart or several in very close proximity.
How do you treat warts?
Though common warts do not require any treatment and usually go away on their own, we can remove them for you if you do not like how they look or because they can spread. Typical treatments include freezing, using topical or injectable treatments, laser treatments, or even surgical removal. Sometimes, repeat treatments are required as they may reappear.
Can I prevent warts?
To prevent or avoid getting warts, we recommend proper hygiene, including keeping your hands clean and never sharing manicure tools.
