What is a chemical peel and how does it work?

A chemical peel is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure that is used to help restore and rejuvenate the skin. Chemical peels can be used on the face, hands, or neck and involve the application of a chemical solution to the skin. This chemical solution causes the targeted area of skin to “blister” and peel off, which results in the growth of a new layer of skin that is smoother with less noticeable wrinkles. There are three different types of chemical peels, each targeting different layers of the skin. Types of chemical peels include:

  • Superficial peels— target the top layer of skin
  • Medium peels— target the middle and top layer of skin
  • Deep peels— fully target the middle layer of skin

Why you may consider a chemical peel

If you are looking for ways to help rejuvenate your skin, a chemical peel can help improve the overall appearance and health of your skin. A chemical peel may be used to help treat a variety of cosmetic skin concerns and conditions, including:

  • Discolored, blotchy, uneven skin, or other pigmentation issues
  • Fine lines below the eyes and around the mouth
  • Acne scars and other facial or body scars
  • Certain types of acne · Dull complexion
  • Sun damaged skin
  • Rough skin
  • Wrinkles
  • Age spots
  • Melasma

What does a chemical peel involve?

A chemical peel involves utilizing a chemical solution to help treat a number of skin conditions and rejuvenate your skin. To help improve the effectiveness of the chemical peel, your doctor may recommend that you follow an at-home skincare routine for two to four weeks prior to the procedure. On the day of the procedure, your doctor will begin by prepping you for treatment, which includes a thorough skin cleansing. Once you are comfortable and properly prepped, your doctor will apply the chemical peel solution to the affected area of skin. Your doctor will then carefully monitor your skin, removing the peel when desired results are visible. Depending on which type of chemical peel you received, your doctor may provide additional aftercare once the peel is removed.

What is recovery like after a chemical peel?

For the best possible results and to protect your skin, at-home care, which may include the application of topical creams, daily soaks, and certain medications, will be required. Not following your at-home care plan may result in certain side effects, including infection. For more noticeable or desired results, additional chemical peel treatments may be needed. How often you should get a chemical peel will depend on the type of chemical peel that you receive. Speak with your doctor to learn more about a chemical peel routine that may be best for you.

What are the benefits of a chemical peel?

By removing top layers of skin, a chemical peel can help to treat a variety of cosmetic skin conditions and promote the growth of a new and healthy layer of skin, leaving your skin feeling more radiant, and you more confident. Benefits of a chemical peel include:

  • Improved skin tone, texture, and health
  • Safe and effective across various conditions
