What are Spider Veins?
Spider veins are the thin blood vessels that lie close to the skin. When they are damaged or fail to function properly, blood pools cause them to swell or weaken. This creates a web-like appearance giving them the name “spider veins.” Most often, they appear on your legs, but they can also appear on your face, feet, and ankles. Spider veins are rarely serious, but they are not attractive. Depending on the severity of your spider veins, you may choose to have them removed.
What causes Spider Veins?
As we age, vessels and veins become more prominent. Though they are usually harmless, the three main reasons we get spider veins are:
- Heredity
- Extended Periods of Time Sitting or Standing
- Pregnancy
How do you treat Spider Veins?
Spider veins are corrected with a treatment called sclerotherapy. Sclerotherapy consists of a series of injections containing a chemical which is designed to collapse the veins, making them disappear or become less obvious. Each sclerotherapy treatment takes about 30 minutes.
Is sclerotherapy painful?
With Sclerotherapy, there may be some mild discomfort or stinging as the fluid is injected into the vein. You might experience some mild discomfort during treatment.
What is the recovery from sclerotherapy like?
Patients receiving sclerotherapy treatments are encouraged to go on about their day in a normal manner, making sure to continue any exercise regimen that promotes blood flow, as that will speed recovery.

When will I see the results from sclerotherapy?
The veins collapse immediately, and their appearance diminishes over the next several weeks. Most patients see significant improvement in the appearance of spider veins each time they have sclerotherapy. It typically takes from two to four treatments depending on the severity of the spider veins.
How long do the results from sclerotherapy last?
When the vein is collapsed through sclerotherapy, the results may vary from person to person. It is still possible that you may develop spider veins in other areas.
Can I combine sclerotherapy with other procedures?
You must meet with one of our skilled providers to discuss your overall goals and to determine whether you can safely combine treatments and procedures. Many times, sclerotherapy may be safely combined with other treatments, but this is determined on an individual basis.
What is the cost of sclerotherapy?
The cost for sclerotherapy depends on the extent of the procedure. Each patient is different and has varying degrees of spider veins. We are happy to talk to you about your financial options for sclerotherapy and other cosmetic treatments. We can also help determine if your health insurance covers any of the cost of this treatment.
